Dirk Heiss has been a potter, painter and artist for over 40 years in Canada and Germany. His pottery can be found in homes, offices and galleries.

Dirk became interested clay in high school and later attended Vancouver School of Art. Then in 1983 received his Art Teachers Diploma in Art Education from UBC. He is currently working with eminent BC potter Sam Kwan in the Studio Art Department of Capilano College.

He has studied the teachings of Michael Cardew, as well as the works of Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada and Hans Coper. His journey of exploration into the world of fire and clay has led him to produce raku as well as salt fired vases, richly colorful gas fired platters, and delicate porcelain bowls. The joy of using these timeless pieces is having the beauty of the artistry in harmony with their form and function.

A statement by the artist:

To be able to take clay, give it shape, expose it to fire, then turn it back to the rock like material we call stoneware has always fascinated me. In making my shapes I strive not for technical perfection or symmetry but try to allow irregularities and accidents to enhance the form and surface of the pot. In Michael Cardew's words; "the plain things....have more inner life and power than the perfect production articles... not interfered with by the analytical mind.."

To be involved in this ongoing exploration has provided me with both exhilaration and contentment.
